New Life for Old Bags

10:30 a.m. to noon the second Saturday of each month – next, Sept. 14 – at the Plano Community Library, 15 W. North St. Volunteers turn discarded plastic shopping bags into plastic yarn to be crocheted into sleeping mats for the homeless. Donations of plastic bags can be left at the library. North St. Hear about Plano’s history as the birthplace of the Harvester when local author Jeanne Valentine introduces her new book, “Better Than the Reaper.” The book is available at the library for purchase for $10, or to checkout. Armed Forces Run

Saturday, Sept. 14, beginning at the Sandwich VFW, 713 S. Main St. Registration will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. All bikes depart at 10:30 a.m. and ride at their own pace. Stops include the Dixon VFW, Mendota VFW, Ottawa Legion, Yorkville Legion, and the ride ends at the Sandwich VFW. Donation of $20 per rider/$15 per passenger includes food before and after the ride. Huntley Brown in Concert

Behind The Stars: The Remarkable Women Who Helped Build Chicago

6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, at the Sandwich Public Library, 925 S. Main St. The stars on the Chicago flag represent four major events that changed Chicago forever (Fort Dearborn, Chicago Fire, World’s Columbian Exposition, and Century of Progress Exposition). This presentation examines how women responded to these events, and in the process built the city we know today. Presented by Laurie Russell of Cantigny Park.

Pet Expo

Library Anniversary Ice Cream Social

Noon Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Sandwich Public Library, 925 S. Main St. To celebrate its fifth anniversary, the library will hold an ice cream social for all its patrons. Everyone who stops by will be entered into a raffle to win some library swag.

American Legion Fish Fries

5 to 7:30 p.m. Fridays at the Sheridan American Legion Post 729, 300 W. Si Johnson Ave. The fish fry includes a choice of catfish or cod, fried or poached, with fries, hush puppies and a complete salad bar for $9. Carry-outs are available by calling 815-496-2380.

The Sept. 20 special is scalloped potatoes and ham and includes the salad bar.

Fall Festival

CCT’s “1776” Auditions
