Fox Valley Family YMCA recently announced Open Door as their 2020 Chosen Charity. The goal of the partnership is to provide opportunities to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Chosen Charity is the Y’s yearlong commitment to a fellow community organization that shares in the Y’s mission.
The Y and Open Door have planned monthly activities and events in an effort to build a stronger relationship between the two organizations.
“One of the Y’s goals is to partner with other nonprofits in our community who share a similar vision,” said Stephanie Majewski, Fox Valley Family YMCA CEO. “Taking the thinking from me to we, together we can make a bigger, positive impact in our community.”
The Chosen Charity partnership will provide Open Door clients with opportunities to swim, take fitness classes and work in a community garden. The partnership will support Open Door with monetary donations and volunteer opportunities. In addition, Open Door staff will be providing specific training for Y employees that will expand their knowledge base on best practices for engaging and supporting individuals with disabilities. These classes will enable staff to best meet each person’s needs when participating in Y classes and activities.
Open Door Executive Director Rita Potter said, “Open Door is honored to be selected as the 2020 Chosen Charity and is looking forward to a deepened partnership with the Y. This will be an amazing opportunity for the individuals we serve.”
Open Door will be featured at the Y’s Healthy Kids Day on April 18. Learn about Fox Valley Family YMCA’s mission at foxvalleyymca.org/about-us/mission-and-vision and Open Door’s mission at odrc.org.
