5:15 p.m. reception, 6 p.m. dinner Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Grandma’s Table Restaurant, 1700 Douglas Road. Dinner includes a choice of entrée (fish, chicken or beef), soup or salad, dinner rolls, vegetables, dessert and nonalcoholic drink. Cost is $21. A lower-cost salad entrée can be purchased for $13. The guest speaker will be retired Major Gen. James H. Mukoyama Jr., who will discuss “The Moral Wounds of War.”

All-you-can-eat Kumla Dinner

4:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at Helmar Lutheran Church, 11935 Lisbon Road. The menu includes ham, kumla (like a dumpling), applesauce, dessert and beverage. A baked potato can be substituted for kumla, Carryouts available. This free-will donation dinner supports the HLC Food Pantry, which has grown from serving 10 families to 120, twice a month, in its 12 years of operation. For information, call 815-695-5489.

New Life for Old Bags

10:30 a.m. to noon the second Saturday of each month – next, Jan. 11 – at the Plano Community Library, 15 W. North St. Volunteers turn discarded plastic shopping bags into plastic yarn to be crocheted into sleeping mats for the homeless. Donations of plastic bags can be left at the library. Breakfast Buffet

Dearborn St. Sons of the American Legion will serve the all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet featuring scrambled eggs, egg casserole, potatoes, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, waffles, made-to-order omelets and more. Cost is $8 for adults, $5 for ages 11 and younger.
