Summer food program feeds kids for free

With summer here, it’s time to think about keeping children healthy while school is out. Volunteer groups from the City of Plano will serve free meals to children 18 and younger beginning July 1.

Children can go to Lathrop Park on Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to noon for free lunch. Lathrop Park is also known as the “Purple Park with the Splash Pad.”

Free lunch is also available Monday through Friday at the Lakewood Springs South Clubhouse from July 1-Aug. 9 from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m.

It is a requirement that all meals must be eaten on site and cannot be picked up and taken home.

There are no income requirements and registration is not required. Children do not have to be eligible for free meals during the school year in order to receive free meals in the summer. Kids can pick up a free punch card at either location and receive fun prizes all summer long.

Lathrop Park is located at 100 N. James St. in Plano and Lakewood Springs South Clubhouse is located at 501 S. Mitchell Drive in Plano.

The Summer Foods Service Program is made possible through a collaboration between the United States Department of Agriculture, Northern Illinois Food Bank, Plano Community Unit School District 88, Plano Public Library, and local churches and organizations.
