The award recognized his outstanding commitment to enriching the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Kapela stepped down from the board after 34 years of service, which included the role of board president for seven years.
Kapela was also a founding member and chairman of Open Door’s annual golf outing, a fundraising event that originated 26 years ago. Kapela served as golf outing chairman for 25 of those years.
Open Door thanked Kapela for being a strong advocate for the organization, and for the time and energy he dedicated to moving Open Door’s mission forward.
