Sandwich Opera House to kick off 141st season

The Sandwich Opera House’s new season started Monday, Jan. 13 and runs through May 16.

The 141st season at the Sandwich Opera House, 140 E. Railroad St. in Sandwich, features a variety of shows and acts, such as kid-friendly educational shows, Indian Valley Theatre’s “Snow White” and “Dancing Like the Stars.”

Performances also feature sounds from around the world, including Celtic music with Switchback’s “Traveling Down An Irish Road,” country music by Carolina Pine, and the Caribbean sounds of the Mr. Myers Band.

“We provide a wide variety of shows with a wide variety of genres and world cultures for all of the community and the Fox Valley area,” said Chris Roe, Sandwich Opera House executive director. “What makes the opera house special is that you can view a whole variety of shows in the historic opera house building. We celebrated our 140th year last year. The Sandwich Opera House opened in 1879.”

The opera house will celebrate Valentine’s Day with a fundraiser, “Love Letters.”

“Love Letters” is the story of Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with a birthday party, postcards and letters sent back and forth throughout their lives. Ladd will be played by Mike Shepard of Shelter Insurance and Gardner will be played by Barb Nadeau, Plano Ward 1 alderman.

Performances of “Love Letters” will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 15 and 2 p.m. Feb. 16. Tickets cost $15 each. A dinner and show option is available for $30, featuring a meal at Country Girl Food Services before the performance.

Roe said the funds raised from the performances of “Love Letters” will be used for updating and repairs at the opera house.

“Some of our windows were replaced in July, and now the curtains in front of the windows need to be replaced,” Roe said. “As a nonprofit organization, donations and fundraisers are very important. They allow us to continue to offer a wide variety of great shows.”
