Open Door clients would like to thank everyone who collected and donated bottle caps for the bench project. The bottle caps were sorted, weighed and then boxed. The 400 pounds of bottle caps were taken to Green Tree Plastics in Evansville, Indiana, where the caps were upcycled into two all-weather benches.

It was a fun, community-driven project. Open Door received caps from individuals, businesses, doctor’s offices and schools. Prairie View School in Sandwich even hosted a special event in Open Door’s honor and presented Open Door with a truckload of caps. The project proved to be an exercise in what people can accomplish when they work together. Open Door clients were educated on the value of recycling and caring for the Earth. Participants also learned about collecting, sorting and tallying weights.

Open Door would like to thank the special people who funded the benches: members of the Somonauk Lions Club and Eric and Kaylee Hill.

The benches are now in place, ready for friends and family to share and enjoy for many years.

Open Door has been “Opening Doors and Developing Opportunities” for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities since 1963. For information about their services or to donate, visit www.odrc.org or call 815-786-8468.
