SANDWICH – The Sandwich Public Library wants your plastic.
In an effort to help protect the environment, the Sandwich Library, 925 S. Main St., has been participating in the Community Recycling Program through Trex since January.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s most recent figures, 34.5 million tons of plastic were generated in the U.S. in 2015.
If the library collects a total of 500 pounds of plastic by June 1, Trex will donate a composite bench to the library. To date, the library has collected about 150 pounds.
“If we collect 500 pounds of plastic in six months, the plastic will be compounded and the library will receive a free bench from Trex,” said Barb Posinger, reference and reader services librarian. “The project brings the community together, people of all ages, to protect the environment and the beauty of our town.”
Collection items include grocery bags, bread bags, dry cleaning bags, newspaper sleeves, ice bags, Ziploc and other resealable bags, bubble wrap and cereal bags. All materials must be clean, dry and free of food residue.
A collection bin is located in the main entranceway of the library.
Matthew Jones, circulation staff at the library, said he was surprised at how quickly the collected plastic has been piling up.
“Everyone has that bag of bags at their house, and by participating in our recycling program, you’d be helping the library, the community and the world,” Jones said. “It’s a way to keep the oceans and waterways clean. We can all be good stewards of our resources.”
Posinger said the recycling program is just one way the library stays green. Batteries, ink cartridges and cellphones also are being collected for recycling at the circulation desk.
“Everyone shops and comes into contact with plastics. Collecting plastic and turning it into a bench is worthwhile and aesthetically pleasing,” she said. “We hope that the recycling program continues, that we can have benches throughout the community that are made from collected plastic.”
